Why do we have acne?

There are multiple reasons for acne. In this post, I will try to discuss some of them with possible solutions and helpful advice.

Hormones

Usually, our hormones are the main culprit. This is the reason why little kids do not have acne. Good for them. As our body goes through puberty, we have a hormonal change in our body. Our body starts to produce more sebum, an oil that is produced in our skin’s oil glands.

Food

You might have heard that some food items can harm our skin’s health. These are mainly junk foods, chocolate, nuts, and milk products. Try to stay away from these if you have serious skin problems.

A high-carbohydrate diet can make acne worse. Certain foods raise your blood sugar hence a hormone, called insulin quickly. Insulin can cause your oil glands to produce more sebum. These foods include sugar, white bread, white rice, pasta.

Stress

During stress our body’s hormonal system easily becomes imbalanced, and the produced androgens are responsible for causing the ugly blackheads and acne.

So try to not stress too much about your pimples.

Cosmetics

If our skin pores become clogged, it gives a foundation to pimples, blackheads, and acne. Some cosmetics and skincare products can make your skin clogged. As a basic rule, try to find cosmetics that contain water as their base.

What to avoid for beautiful, acne-free skin?

Stay away from beverages, sodas, coffee, and other caffeinated drinks.

Sodas contain a lot of sugar or artificial sweeteners and other harmful substances.

Avoid fast-food restaurants as even their salad dressing is awful: full of preservatives, salt and additives.

Try not to eat processed food such as cold cuts, sausages and packet soups, etc. These have enormous amounts of preservatives, sodium glutamate and artificial aroma in them.

Avoid frozen burgers, pizzas and breaded meat.

Chocolates can make acne worse but dark chocolates contain much less sugar and bad fats and they also have a lot of polyphenols that are strong antioxidants. So if you would like to eat some delicacy, eat some dark chocolate!

Now that we figured out the main and most common reasons behind acne-prone skin, let’s discuss some foods and drinks that help us to fight these monsters!

Why should we try to combat acne by foods and drinks?

Because they lay down a good, healthy foundation. With this foundation, we can target the issue at its root which is the best approach to clear, glowing skin!

Creams, spot treatments, and serums help only on the top of the skin. They can be great complementary solutions but they are not enough by themselves.

Liquids are the most important part of an acne-free diet

I am sure you have already heard that you must drink enough but what does “enough” mean and do you drink that much?

The skin needs to be hydrated not only from the outside (with creams) but also from the inside.

On average we should consume 2-3 liters of water daily. Of course, it depends on the circumstances (summer heat or winter cold; your body size, healthy condition, activity level, etc).

The best drinks are clear water and (herb) 🌿 teas. Veggie and fruit juices are great, too but they must be freshly pressed and not canned.

Coffee and other caffeine-containing drinks have some diuretic effect so you need to drink a little more water if you consume coffee.

Spearmint Tea

Spearmint tea is the best if you have hormonal acne. When hormones are imbalanced, breakouts and pimples can occur.

Mint has anti-inflammatory and anti-androgenic effects, its properties decrease sebum production.

Drink two cups of organic spearmint tea every day as it can reduce the redness of pimples by lowering inflammation.

It is said to be as effective against acne as prescription remedies.

You can also put a cotton pad into the leftover and scrub your face with it.

Chamomile tea

Chamomile is one of the most popular tea for skin. It is great for irritated, red skin. One of its components is quercetin that can protect your skin from the sun (it does not replace sun-creams!).

If you have under-eye dark circles, you can put a chamomile tea bag on your eyes as it will de-puff and calm the area.

Ginger tea

Ginger tea has a strong, healing effect on our body’s digestive tract. And if our digestion is not functioning well, our skin also suffers.

Ginger tea also has anti-inflammatory power.

Drink warm ginger drink to strengthen your immune system, prevent cold and have a pimple-free skin.

Making a Ginger Tea the easy way:

  1. Slice the cleaned fresh ginger thinly. A one-inch piece of ginger is enough per cup of tea.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the ginger with fresh water (use one cup of water per serving).
  3. Boil it over high heat. Reduce the heat as necessary to maintain a gentle simmer.
  4. Simmer for five minutes (or up to 10 minutes, if you want extra-strong tea).
  5. Pour the tea into a mug (you can pour it through a fine sieve to catch all the ginger but I like to “eat” them).
  6. You can add some honey or maple syrup to your tee (they can also temper the strong ginger flavor).

White tea

White tea is the least processed type of tea, so it has even more antioxidants than green tea and has the highest catechin content. It also has great antibacterial properties that can fight several types of skin conditions.

Turmeric Tea

The anti-inflammatory component of turmeric is called curcumin. It is famous for its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-fungal properties.

It’s used for medicinal purposes to heal a wide range of internal and external conditions.

Turmeric is a popular DIY mask ingredient, but you can also add one teaspoon of ground turmeric to hot water to drink as a tea for similar acne-healing benefits.

Dandelion Chai

The ingredients of Dandelion supports the internal systems of your body, such as your gut, your liver, your immune system.

Dandelion root helps with the liver detoxification process and also heals adrenal fatigue, which can lead to acne.

Chai is also beneficial because it calms down irritation and improves digestion.

Veggie and fruit juices the help you clear your skin

Fruits and veggies are full of  antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and water. So eat as much as you can!

The best ones are: broccoli, brussels sprout, spinach – they all contain vitamin A, calcium and antioxidants.

Carrots have a lot of beta carotene that helps to neutralize free radicals and can protect your skin against UVA-light induced damage.

It contributes to the overall enhancement of your skin”s appearance.

If you consume a lot of beta carotene, your skin might turn a bit more yellow-reddish. Studies show that people with a yellow-red hue to their skin look more healthy—and are judged as being more attractive.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon Drink

Both lemon and ACV are beneficial ingredients when it comes to your internal health. Putting them together, you get the ultimate anti-blemish solution.

Lemon is a good source of Vitamin C. It is one of the most popular skincare ingredients today and also has benefits to the digestive system. It increases our defense against bad bacteria, free radicals, and other gut-attacking enemies by supporting a healthy immune system.

Apple cider vinegar helps your body absorb minerals better and also rebalances the pH of the stomach.

How to make this elixir? Just combine 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (you can get started with only 1/2 tbsp if too strong) with a juice of 1/2 lemon in 3 dl of water.

Green Juice With Kale

Green juice (when blended with leafy greens) is a great way to boost the appearance of your complexion.

Kale is packed with Vitamin A that helps to promote cell turnover and Vitamin C that brightens and heals the skin.

Cucumber Infused Water

Cucumbers are filled with skin-boosting minerals such as magnesium and potassium and vitamin C that reduces skin irritations.

The peel of the cucumber contains silica, which firms up sagging skin.

Eat as much cucumber as you can, make it one of your new best friends. It also contains a lot of water!

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice as your one-stop-shop for a better complexion.

It’s packed with Vitamin A, E, and C. Its healing properties fade hyper-pigmentation and reduce the look of fine lines.

Pomegranate can purify blood that further helps in nourishing your skin and making it glow.

Carrot juice

How to make a delicious carrot drink

Ingredients

5 carrots
2 apples
2 oranges
1 lemon
1 banana
2 tbs honey
some water

  1. Peel the carrots, cut them up.
  2. Add a little water to them and boil it.
  3. Reduce heat and let it simmer for a few minutes. (Cooking the carrots will make beta carotene easier to digest and absorb.)
  4. Cut the apples
  5. Juice the lemon
  6. Peel the orange
  7. When the carrots are tender turn off the heat and let it cool.
  8. Mix the carrots (and the water it was cooking in), the apples, the lemon juice and the peeled oranges in a blender.
  9. Pour it into mugs, add honey and some water if needed.
  10. Enjoy!

Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte is full of antioxidants, including the so-called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a unique plant compound that has a potential positive impact on health and counteracts the sebum oxidation that occurs before acne starts to develop.

Also, matcha has more than 100 times more antioxidants than regular green tea.

It detoxifies the skin and also contains chlorophyll and catechins that help fight bacterial infections.

Ingredients

  • Water
  • Matcha tea powder
  • Milk (of your choice)
  • Maple syrup
  • Vanilla extract (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk until hot. Stir occasionally
  2. Add boiling water to the matcha tea powder in a mug. Stir until well combined.
  3. Add maple syrup, ground cinnamon to the mixture.
  4. Pour the milk to the matcha tea mixture.
  5. Stir until mixed and enjoy!

Turmeric Golden Latte

Also called the “Sunshine Latte”

As you know already, turmeric can reduce inflammation, as it contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and protective active compound called curcumin.

Consuming turmeric can decrease symptoms in skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

Turmeric can be added to various kinds of dishes, can be drunk as a tea or you can make this latte. Either way, it will have great impacts! To enhance the absorption of curcumin, try to add some pepper or cayenne pepper to turmeric.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk of choice
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • Pinch of ground cayenne or black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp each cinnamon and ground ginger (optional)
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)

Directions

  1. Add ingredients to a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk until steaming and frothy
  2. Pour into a mug and enjoy!

Probiotics can heal your skin

Probiotics can reduce systemic inflammation, the main cause of many diseases.

Because probiotics stimulate immune cells and reduce inflammation internally, they are also excellent against acne. Whether they are due to malnutrition, excess sebum production or stress, a probiotic cure will help to eliminate your pimples and blackheads.

Kefir, yogurt, and kombucha contain live flora and healthy bacteria. When consumed regularly, they will have a good effect on our entire body.

Kombucha

Great for detoxifying the skin! It contains plenty of antioxidants and probiotics which help to reduce fine lines and improve skin elasticity. It’s a great natural remedy for sunburns too.

Kefir

The protein called lactoferrin gives kefir extra blemish-fighting power.

Drink it regularly to decrease the inflammatory acne lesions.

What else can you do to have an acne-free, beautiful skin?

Eat as much skin-friendly food as you possibly can!

Some examples:

  • yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoes
  • salmon, mackerel, and other kinds of fatty fish
  • tomatoes
  • spinach and other dark green and leafy vegetables
  • berries
  • pumpkin seeds (in moderation)
  • whole-wheat bread, quinoa, brown rice
  • turkey
  • beans, peas, and lentils

You can also take hair and nail vitamins. They are also great for the skin.

Look for these ingredients: Zinc, vitamin C, B1, B6, biotin, hyaluronic acid (it prevents dehydration of skin), vitamin E.

Don’t take more vitamins than it is advised on its container. It will not help you but can harm you!

Take care of your health and your skin will thank you!

Of course, it is not a sin to eat at a fast-food restaurant, to drink a Coke. Just try to reduce the amounts as much as you can, don’t go overboard and consume moderately.
